Fatehpur Sikri near Agra

The wise man told Akbar that he would soon have a son. A year later, the queen had a son whom Akbar named Salim. Akbar was so happy that he decided to build a city in honour of Chisti. He built a beautiful fortified city near the village of Sikri, just west of Agra, and called it Fatehpur. Built during the second half of the 16th century by the Emperor Akbar, Fatehpur Sikri (the City of Victory) was the capital of the Mughal Empire for only some 10 years. The complex of monuments and temples, all in a uniform architectural style, includes one of the largest mosques in India, the Jama Masjid.

Red sandstone buildings cluster at its center. Buland Darwaza gate is the entrance to Jama Masjid mosque. Nearby is the marble Tomb of Salim Chishti. Diwan-E-Khas hall has a carved central pillar. Jodha Bais Palace is a mix of Hindu and Mughal styles, next to the 5-story Panch Mahal that overlooks the site.

City Palace Jaipur

City Palace at Jaipur makes it on to everyone’s list of places to visit in Jaipur for good reason. Not only is it located right in the middle of the Old City, it is a beautiful and well preserved attraction that can be seen in a few short hours.

The City Palace was built between 1727 and 1732 by Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of the city of Jaipur, who also built the Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar. Apart from Jai Singh II, there were two architects involved in the development of City Palace Jaipur – Vidyadar Bhattacharya, the chief architect in the royal court, and Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob.

The architecture of City Palace Jaipur is based on a fusion of the Vastu Shastra of Indian architecture – combining Rajput, Mughal and European styles of architecture. Part of City Palace Jaipur is a museum; the other part is the residence of the descendants of the former rulers of Jaipur. City Palace Jaipur can be accessed through any entrance gate except for Tripolia gate which is reserved for the royal family.

The most impressive part of City Palace Jaipur are the four small gates in the third courtyard that represent the four seasons of the year. One of the most interesting items in the palace are two sterling silver jars that are officially recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest sterling silver vessels

Another popular attraction in the Mubarak Mahal of City Palace Jaipur is the set of voluminous clothes worn by Sawai Madho Singh I, who was 1.2 metres wide and weighed 250 kilograms. When you visit the City Palce, look out for the flag at the top of Chandra Mahal, it belongs to the royal family and is only unfurled when the Maharaja is in the palace.

Hawa Mahal Jaipur

If you are visiting Jaipur, Hawa Mahal is One place you would love to explore.

“Palace of Winds” or “Palace of the Breeze” is a palace in Jaipur, India, so named because it was essentially a high screen wall built so the women of the royal household could observe street festivals while unseen from the outside.

Its unique five-storey exterior is akin to the honeycomb of a beehive with its 953 small windows called jharokhas through which the breeze flows in and keeps the palace cool. It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh designed by Lal Chand Ustad in the form of the crown of Krishna, the Hindu god.

Hawa Mahal is a cultural and architectural heritage,a true reflection of a fusion of Hindu Rajput architecture and the Islamic Mughal architecture; the Rajput style is seen in the form of domed canopies, fluted pillars, lotus and floral patterns, and the Islamic style as evident in its stone inlay filigree work and arches.

Few are aware that due to lack of a solid foundations the palace is curved and leaning at an angle of 87 degree. Still the palace stands upright because of the pyramidal shape.

Bagore Ki Haveli Udaipur

Bagore Ki Haveli is an ancient building that stands on the platform of Gangori Ghat in the vicinity of Pichola Lake, Udaipur, Rajasthan India. The splendid architecture of the mansion boasts of delicate carved work and excellent glass work. In the eighteenth century, Bagore Ki Haveli was built by Amir Chand Badwa, who was the Chief Minister at the Mewar Royal Court in earlier times. When Amar Badwa died, the building came under the possession of Mewar State.

In 1878, the Haveli made the abode to Maharana Shakti Singh of Bagore, who further incorporated three stories to the main structure. Since that time, the mansion came to be known as Bagore Ki Haveli (Mansion of Bagore). The mansion that used to serve the royalty of Mewar was left vacant for around 50 years. During this long period of desertion, the building deteriorated to an extent. In 1986, the building was handed over to the West Zone Cultural Centre.

To provide this building the same royal look, experts and members of the Royal family were consulted. The Haveli was restored in its old architectural style and a museum was set up in its complex. This museum portrays the patrician culture of Mewar. It has conserved the premium mural paintings of Rajasthan designed in Mewar. The museum also displays the costumes of the royal kings and modern art.

Dharohar is the name of a cultural event held in the collaboration with WZCC every evening 7pm to 8pm at Neem Chowk inside Bagore ki haveli. This event is a musical concert combining 7 traditional Rajasthani folk dances performed every day from last 10 years. This is one event you have to attend when you visit Udaipur. It has traditional Rajasthani dance performances, puppet show and amazing folk songs that will create some truly magical experiences.

Lake Pichola Udaipur

Sprawling on for about 4 km, Pichola Lake is the crowning glory of City of Lakes – Udaipur. This artificial lake was made in the 14th century to cater to the shortage of water in the region. The crystal waters of the lake with the backdrop of the Aravali hills was what impressed the erstwhile Maharanas of Rajasthan and leaves spectators awestruck even today. The most amazing aspects of this lake are the four islands that speck its surface: Jag Mandir Island, Jag Niwas Island, Arsi Vilas Island and Mohan Mandir Island.

City Palace Udaipur

Touted as one of the biggest palaces in Rajasthan, the City Palace was built by Maharana Udai Singh in 1559. Witnessing a number of additions with each successive ruler of the Mewar kingdom, the palace today is a beautiful combination of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture. In 1974, a part of the City Palace and the ‘Zenana Mahal’ (Ladies Chamber) have been transformed into a museum. The museum is open for public.

One can locate some striking paintings in the ‘Zenana Mahal’ which further leads to Lakshmi Chowk. ‘Lakshmi Chowk’ is a beautiful white pavilion.

In City palace, the most captivating sight can be viewed from the towers and terraces of ‘Amar Vilas’ from where you can get a breathtaking view of Lake Pichola.

‘Amar Vilas’ is the highest point of this Palace and has wonderful hanging gardens with fountains, towers and terraces.
